Le Festival Son et Image de Montréal 2007 Show Report

Omaha Audio is a new name under a familiar umbrella. I met Ronald Hedrich of Marigo Audio, famous for its tuning dots, among many other products. I noticed the intricate machined prototype footers beneath the Omaha tube integrated amplifier and the conversation quickly shifted to vibration absorption, as this happens to be a favorite pursuit of my own. The Omaha OD-300B is a single ended triode integrated amplifier designed in the US and manufactured in China…It did a wonderful job powering the very handsome stand mounted loudspeakers that were also an Omaha Audio prototype……”.

“Much as we love expensive gear that we (and perhaps you) can dream about, we also like to run across affordable products that can make real music. That's the case of the Omaha OD-300B, an inexpensive single-ended tube integrated amplifier. It was feeding a rather nice pair of stand-mounted speakers whose name we tried, without success, to make out. In fact, they are prototypes, and they are made by Omaha….”

“More brand to add to the list is Omaha Audio, inexplicably based in Walnut, California. Omaha made their debut only four months ago, at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show, and so are still a lesser-known quantity in hi-fi circles. After visiting their room and seeing their product line, I don’t imagine this situation will last long. One of Omaha’s smartest-looking pieces was their sleek OD-300B, a single-ended-triode (SET) integrated amplifier that employs a pair of 300B vacuum tubes to produce 10Wpc.”

Omaha was showing this nifty little 10 Wpc No.OD-300B integrated amplifier, which was driving Omaha's Omaha Speaker. Do I need to say that the No.OD300B uses a pair of 300B tubes? The system sounded warm and spacious. 10Wpc may not sound like much, but the Omaha speaker seemed comfortably driven. Fit' n 'finish was impressive.”

“I heard this integrated amplifier at Home Entertainment 2007 and, at that show’s “Ask the Editors” session, advised show goers to go hear it. This is what   single –ended   triode ( SET )  tube sound is all about.  “The best value of vacuum tube amplifier in the world,” claims the sales literature…

One of the best, for sure.

…Yes, the OD-300B could have had more resolution. The focus was slightly soft. I thought the top end a little closed in or topped off, if you will. But these are mere quibbles about an amplifier that is so affordable—and musical.

It’s about palpable presence. Having the performers in the room with you. SET can get the music closer to you, so that you are closer to the music. It’s not so much that you’re there; the musicians are here. In the room with you.

Highly  recommended!”

This amplifier would be excellent for folks with slightly bright systems or listening rooms, or with other components that perhaps make the music sound "etched". It is also suitable for systems with monitors and separate subwoofers, as well as single driver speaker systems where the speakers themselves do not go to the lowest octaves. Given its combination of price, aesthetics, quality build, and overall sonics, I strongly recommend the OD-300B.  Akhilesh Bajaj
